GOOGLE'S MOBILE-FRIENDLY ALGORITHM. WHAT'S THE FUSS ALL ABOUT?

Google is bringing out its new "Mobile Friendly" Algorithm on April 21st 2015.

Google's Mobile Friendly Algorithm

The main significant impact of the changes Google is making will be on mobile search results which will now favour "mobile friendly" websites.

As always when Google makes an announcement that it's changing its algorithms people who value their websites (which is most of us) always get a bit jittery!

Well the one thing about this change is that it only affects mobile search results (not the usual searches on desktop computers or laptops)

Another interesting thing is that the algorithm is applied page-by-page rather than over the entire site so those sites which have certain areas setup to be mobile friendly (like your blog, or e-commerce section) and others not mobile friendly will not have the whole site penalised for not being totally mobile friendly.

The change also means that indexed Android apps will now be ranked in search results for people signed into Google and have that Android app on their device. (Kind of the same improvement when .pdf documents became ranked in search results as useful information)

"If you'd rather us tell you what it's all about, how it might affect you, if you should do anything about it now, and how we can help you ....

.... give us a call or drop us an email at info@synccreative.co.uk and we can have a chat over the phone or even better over a cup of coffee and put it in plain English for you"

So – is this a good thing?

Personally we think it is. It will start to make people sit up and realise that more and more users are searching on mobile devices and there's nothing more annoying than landing on a web page (which may well be exactly what you're looking for) which you can't see without zooming in and faffing about.

The changes mean that those searching on a mobile device are more likely to find mobile friendly sites – All Good!

The bottom line is that Google knows how important the mobile internet is and it's trying to make it better to use for its mobile users.

Do I need to do anything to my site if it's not mobile friendly?

The honest answer is: How important is your website to you and how much do you think your site is used on mobile devices.

For example an estate agent with a non-mobile friendly site is more likely to need to make a change than a specialist metal worker – the estate agents site is probably going to have far more users viewing their site on mobiles while they're out looking at properties than the specialist metal workers site users ordering products.

From our professional point of view – it is better to make the change to mobile friendly (see Responsive & Adaptive web design) sooner rather than later as it is only going to become more and more important as time goes by.

Is it something to panic about?

No not really! Your sites are not going to disappear from search results because of these changes.

If you have any questions we're here to help, email us on info@synccreative.co.uk, we can answer your questions on this subject and help you out if you need to make any changes to your site – but don't panic, let's have a look at what you've got and how important it is for you to react to Googles change.
