So – is this a good thing?
Personally we think it is. It will start to make people sit up and realise that more and more users are searching on mobile devices and there's nothing more annoying than landing on a web page (which may well be exactly what you're looking for) which you can't see without zooming in and faffing about.
The changes mean that those searching on a mobile device are more likely to find mobile friendly sites – All Good!
The bottom line is that Google knows how important the mobile internet is and it's trying to make it better to use for its mobile users.
Do I need to do anything to my site if it's not mobile friendly?
The honest answer is: How important is your website to you and how much do you think your site is used on mobile devices.
For example an estate agent with a non-mobile friendly site is more likely to need to make a change than a specialist metal worker – the estate agents site is probably going to have far more users viewing their site on mobiles while they're out looking at properties than the specialist metal workers site users ordering products.
From our professional point of view – it is better to make the change to mobile friendly (see Responsive & Adaptive web design) sooner rather than later as it is only going to become more and more important as time goes by.
Is it something to panic about?
No not really! Your sites are not going to disappear from search results because of these changes.
